Well friends, it’s a wonderful time of year for many reasons. Here’s three good ones: (1) The weather is finally cooling down and I don’t have to mow the lawn so often. (2) Football season is in full swing and my beloved Vikings are off to a 3-0 start. (3) Four Peaks has two new beers on tap that I strongly recommend (Hop Knot and the seasonal Blind Date Ale).

Don't forget to check out the 'surprise link' at the right-hand side of this page.

Enough drivel! Here’s what’s currently loaded in my CD player:

1) Warren ZevonGenius: The Best of Warren Zevon
The world lost a great songwriter recently when Zevon died of lung cancer. While this is a fantastic album, my real reason for including it here is to convince any one of my so-called friends (they know who they are) to buy Zevon’s highly acclaimed latest/final CD “The Wind” so I can check it out. How about it Pete? Bill? John?

2) Kathleen Edwards - Failer
Edwards’ performance at Bumbershoot was a highlight for me, despite the fact that I hadn’t heard anything of her’s previously. She came across in concert as the classic ‘bad girl with the good heart’, singing about such ladylike topics as sleeping with bad guys, drinking way too much, sleeping with old married guys, and assorted other misadventures. Any gal who’d write a song called “Hockey Skates” is OK by me. I subsequently read a review that described her sound as Lucinda Williams meets Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Well said, I think.

3) We’re A Happy Family: A Tribute To The Ramones
This is a totally unnecessary ‘tribute’ album that has many big-name current artists (U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Green Day) covering classic Ramones songs. The lesson learned here is never, ever (ever!) accept substitutes when you can still get the originals.

4) John Hiatt & The Goners Beneath This Gruff Exterior
5) John Hiatt Bring The Family
6) John Hiatt Slow Turning
As is my custom, the player is loaded with Hiatt this week in preparation for his show (with Robert Cray) on Friday in Tempe. The first CD is his latest; the other two are my favorites from his vast catalog. Should be a great show.

TURNTABLE CORNER: Believe it or not, I still have a turntable. These are the most recent albums to cross it.

Black Sabbath We Sold Our Soul For Rock And Roll
Though we’ve watched a few episodes of ‘The Osbournes’ on MTV, my wife didn’t recall ever hearing any of Ozzy’s music. Well…..now she’s heard it.

Thanks to all of you that have e-mailed using the link at the top of this page. Keep the e-mails coming, as it makes me feel like this is somewhat less of a waste of time.

Na zdorovia! (that’s Russian for ‘cheers)
