Though fall in Arizona is usually my favorite time of year, these past few weeks have been tough. My employer is going through its' biggest layoff in years, the beloved Vikings have lost four straight after starting out 6-0, and the Suns have stumbled out of the gate and are playing below .500. Knock on wood, I still have my health. In times like this I am very thankful for alcohol and music.

Enough drivel already. As is typical, I’m wading through a glut of new music, and the player is loaded with six recent releases, all very new to me. Here’s what’s currently loaded in my CD player:

1) Gillian Welch Soul Journey
Welch and partner David Rawlings create music reminiscent of Appalachian folk songs of many decades ago. This latest release (her fourth) is no exception. While this approach was once a revelation, by now the formula is wearing thin.
2) Lyle Lovett My Baby Don’t Tolerate
At first listen, Lovett’s latest seems to be more firmly rooted in country than most previous efforts. I’m not yet sure if that’s good or bad.
3) Neil Young & Crazy Horse Greendale
Great music. Great lyrics. Great storyteller. Great album. Never trust anybody that doesn’t like Neil Young.
4) Ryan Adams Rock N Roll
Adams’ official follow-up to the breakthrough "Gold" album was rush recorded after the record label rejected his first effort. The result is a hodge podge of styles that sound nothing like previous Adams solo outings or previous band Whiskeytown. Maybe it’ll grow on me, but I doubt it. Very disappointing.
5) Ryan Adams Love Is Hell, Part 1
Allegedly, this is the first half of the album Adams wanted to release but the record label rejected it. Regardless, it’s far superior to Rock N Roll, though it’s not the classic album that Adams seems to have in him.
6) Jesse MalinThe Fine Art Of Self Destruction
Ryan Adams produced this debut solo album by punk band D Generation’s lead singer. It’s the kind of album Adams himself should be releasing. Great stuff.

TURNTABLE CORNER: Believe it or not, I still have a turntable. These are the most recent albums to cross it.
Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul Men Without Women
This was the first solo album by longtime Springsteen guitarist and current Sopranos actor Steve Van Zandt. I like it better than several Springsteen albums; this is one album I really should upgrade to CD.

Thanks to all of you that have e-mailed using the link at the top of this page. Keep the e-mails coming, as it makes me feel like this is somewhat less of a waste of time.

As you were.
